General Dentistry Services

Dr. Shanks serves the folks of Crossville with general dentistry services that help maintain a lifetime of oral health, such as teeth cleanings, fillings, and gum disease treatments. Our staff is committed to practicing preventative dentistry and teaching the Crossville community all about preventative techniques for healthier teeth. We’re here because we love providing and promoting great dental health.

While transforming smiles with fancy cosmetic treatments is fun and rewarding, our primary goal is to keep your family’s smiles clean and healthy and instill good habits and values that will ensure a lifetime of oral health. We can help you establish a good oral home care routine, and give you a good professional cleaning twice per year to take care of anything you’ve left behind. We will also make note of any changes in your mouth that may be a sign of gum disease or oral cancer, so we can catch it before it becomes more serious.

Oral Hygiene

Your Best Line of Defense

When it comes to oral health, there’s no substitute for a good, steady brushing and flossing regimen. It’s your first line of defense against tooth decay, gum disease and other oral health problems that can cost you a lot of pain and agony (and money!) down the road.

Give us a call at (931) 398-5170 and schedule a cleaning for the whole family today!

The Professional Difference

We love to see our patients practicing great home oral care, but we also recommend that Crossville residents visit Northside Family Dentistry for their regular teeth cleanings to take care of anything you’ve left behind. Only your Crossville dentist has the tools and training to remove hard to reach plaque and hardened tartar that can cause problems.

Our dental hygienists have the training, expertise, and good old fashioned friendliness that it takes to give you a great experience while they deep clean your teeth. After all, there are some things, such as tartar, that regular brushing and flossing alone can’t take care of.

On top of that we’ll perform a thorough examination of your teeth, tongue, and gums so we catch any small issues before they become big, expensive problems. As Dr. Shanks always says, prevention is the best medicine!

Oral Health Starts at Home

As your oral health advisors, our primary mission is to educate our patients to empower them to make healthy choices, and establish good habits that will ensure a lifetime of oral health and happy smiles. Here’s some advice straight from the professionals at Northside Family Dentistry on how to keep your smile clean and healthy at home:

  1. Floss! Do it every day before your nightly brushing to remove plaque between teeth that brushing alone cannot. This is the best way to prevent cavities and gum disease.
  2. Brush! Do it at least twice a day, ideally after each meal. Brush thoroughly for two minutes, and don’t forget the tongue! We recommend an electric toothbrush for the best clean, Sonicare® is our favorite.
  3. Rinse! Rinsing with mouthwash is a great way to remove bacteria in other areas of the mouth that brushing and flossing can miss. Take your checkup from an A to an A+! Not to mention the minty fresh breath.
  4. Water! When brushing and flossing is not an option, water is your friend. Swish vigorously with water after meals to help prevent plaque from building up in the first place.

Gum Disease

Don’t Ignore Bleeding Gums

At Northside Family Dentistry, we want all our Crossville dental patients to have the information they need to ensure their families’ oral health. That’s why we want to talk to you about gum disease. Did you know that the leading cause of tooth loss is not tooth decay or sports injuries, but in fact, gum disease? When bacteria invade the gum tissue and irritate the gums, they begin to create pockets of infection and literally separate the gums from the teeth, leaving room for the infection to progress and wreak havoc on your mouth.

Left unchecked, gum disease can not only cause tooth loss, but can also contribute to serious systemic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory issues, and more. How’s that for a good reason to floss every day?! If your gums are bleeding during regular brushing and flossing, don’t wait until it’s too late! You should come see your Crossville dentist right away.

Give us a call at (931) 398-5170 today and Dr. Shanks can help rejuvenate your gums back to health.

Preventing Gum Disease

If one or more of those symptoms are familiar to you, don’t panic! Gum disease is preventable and treatable. Here are some tips from us at Northside Family Dentistry for keeping your gums happy and healthy:

  • Brush your teeth really well twice a day and replace your toothbrush often (about every 3 months)
  • Floss or use an interdental cleaner at least once a day
  • Eat a balanced diet that limits between-meal snacks
  • Visit your Crossville dentist regularly

Worried about gum disease? The best thing Crossville residents can do is visit Dr. Shanks for a consultation. We’ll take good care of your gums. If you do have gum disease, we can provide you with a custom treatment plan to get it under control. This may include antibiotics and routine periodontal cleanings.

Tooth Colored Fillings

Modern Fillings for a Seamless Smile

Need a filling? Unfortunately, most of us will at some point. Did you know that tooth decay, or dental caries is among the most common chronic diseases in America, second only to the common cold? Fortunately, advances in dental medicine offer Crossville residents a superior alternative to traditional amalgam (metal) fillings of the past.

Call your Crossville dentist, Dr. Johnny Shanks at Northside Family Dentistry today at (931) 398-5170.

No More Metal

Today, getting a filling or other dental restoration doesn’t mean a mouth full of metal. Tooth-colored materials allow your natural smile to shine seamlessly, so no one will ever have to know you’ve had dental work done. As always, our best advice is to maintain a good oral hygiene routine at home, eat a healthy, balanced diet, and maintain your regular visits with Dr. Shanks at Northside Family Dentistry!

At Northside Family Dentistry we offer our patients the best services, so Dr. Shanks only performs fillings with a metal-free, tooth-colored bonding material. The result is a safe, dependable restoration that won’t expand and contract with changes in temperature like metal fillings, bonds directly to your teeth, and blends perfectly with your natural teeth. Ugly metal fillings are no longer necessary! Not to mention they are completely safe for the human body, unlike the trace amounts of toxic mercury found in metal fillings.

Benefits of Tooth Colored Fillings

There are many benefits of tooth colored fillings versus traditional metal fillings, including:

  • Durable & long-lasting
  • Blend in seamlessly with natural teeth
  • Maintain integrity with temperature changes
  • Safe for the human body
  • Highly effective in filling cavities & stopping decay
